Baptisms/Christenings

A baptism (also known as a christening), is more than a ceremony; it is a way of giving thanks for new life and celebrating the profound love that God has for everyone. It is also a commitment - a pledge to follow God’s teachings and live according to his will in every aspect of our lives.

When Jesus was baptised in the River Jordan, it marked a major turning point in his life. Jesus then instructed his followers to baptise others to signify their departure from their old ways and their new journey as his disciples. You can find this story at the beginning of Mark's Gospel in the New Testament.

Who can be baptised?

At St Barnabas Church, we welcome individuals of all ages to the sacrament of baptism. Although commonly associated with infants, baptism is a meaningful step for anyone, regardless of age. For instance, one of our members, who was almost 87 years of age, was the second person to be baptised in our new font after the church's reopening, illustrating that it is never too late to experience this sacred rite.

You are warmly invited to have your baptism at St Barnabas, provided you meet certain criteria. Generally, you should either reside within the parish or have a meaningful connection to the church. Since the requirements can vary, the best approach is to reach out to us directly for guidance.

When do baptisms take place?

Baptisms at St Barnabas are usually integrated into our all-age service on the first Sunday of the month at 10.30am, or on the first and second Sundays of the month at 12.30pm. Please be aware that there may be other baptisms taking place at the same time. Occasionally, they can be arranged in a more intimate setting during the week for adult candidates who prefer a smaller gathering. Whether you are considering baptism for yourself or for a loved one, we are here to support you.
